The superpowers of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity in 2026: which do you use for what?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity? Every AI tool has a superpower. Discover which to use for what and how to combine them smartly in 2026.

The superpowers of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity in 2026: which do you use for what?

Summary

  • Gemini = ecosystem: Google AI Pro bundles Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8 Flash, Gemini Notebook, Antigravity, video with Gemini Omni and images with Nano Banana in one subscription of $19.99 per month (€21.99 in Belgium)
  • ChatGPT = agent: ChatGPT Work completes longer, multi-step tasks on its own through to a finished result; Projects build a living knowledge base with Slack and Drive sources
  • Claude = quality: strong at writing, coding and document analysis; Cowork completes tasks in your files on its own, on the desktop and since July 2026 also in beta on web and mobile
  • Perplexity = research: Model Council puts three top models side by side for the same question, and Research completes most cited reports in under three minutes
  • Smartest approach: Perplexity for research, ChatGPT for project management, Claude for writing and creating, Gemini for Google Workspace integration

Which AI tool is the best? In 2026 the answer depends on the task. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity have each taken a different direction in 2026 and they now complement each other better than they compete. Those who understand this work faster, produce better and do not waste tokens on tasks for which another tool is more suitable.

In this guide Frederiek Pascal, founder of ClickForest and digital growth partner for Belgian SMEs, shares the most current analysis (last checked: September 2026). With verified sources, concrete use cases and a practical workflow you can apply today.

Why one AI tool is no longer enough

Many entrepreneurs and marketers choose one AI tool and push everything through it. That works, but you are leaving performance and time on the table. The four major tools have grown clearly apart.

ChatGPT is in 2026 the strongest tool for autonomous task execution and agentic workflows. Gemini is in 2026 the strongest tool for Google Workspace integration and multimedia output in one subscription. Claude is in 2026 the strongest tool for writing, coding and document analysis. Perplexity is in 2026 the strongest tool for real-time research with cited sources.

The result is that the tool you choose for a task directly determines how good and how fast the result is. In an earlier comparison of AI tools for marketers we provided an initial guideline, but the superpowers per platform have become sharper in 2026. Also check out our direct model comparison of Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity if you want to compare at model level specifically. In this guide we go deep on the superpowers of each platform.

Gemini: the strongest tool for Google Workspace integration and multimedia

Gemini is in 2026 the strongest tool for those who work in the Google ecosystem and want to combine multimedia output with text and analysis in one subscription.

Gemini’s superpower is the integration. Those who have a Google AI Pro subscription (the former Google One AI Premium, now renamed and expanded) get for $19.99 per month (€21.99 in Belgium) a complete productivity suite that is deeply anchored in all Google services.

The package contains Gemini 3.1 Pro and since 2 September Gemini 3.8 Flash, with a context window of 1 million tokens: according to Google up to 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code at once. Gemini Notebook, as Google has called NotebookLM since 16 July 2026, is included with, among other things, 5x more Audio Overviews than the free version. For images, Nano Banana 2 is the default, and with AI Pro you can regenerate an image with Nano Banana Pro. You also get 5 TB cloud storage shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos.

What makes Gemini strong in 2026

Native Google Workspace integration is Gemini’s biggest asset for anyone who works in Google. Gemini sits right inside your working day. In Gmail it summarises long email threads and suggests replies. In Google Docs it writes and rewrites alongside you while you work. In Sheets it analyses data and creates formulas on request. In Meet it transcribes meetings and automatically prepares action points. You stay in the same tab. Copy-pasting between chat and document and re-supplying context each time both disappear. That deep embedding in tools that most entrepreneurs and teams already use daily is a real productivity advantage; in Microsoft 365, Copilot plays that role.

Video with Gemini Omni

Since Google I/O in May 2026, Gemini Omni Flash makes and edits video in the Gemini app for all Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers; according to Google, Omni takes over the role of Veo there. AI Pro also includes a limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite, while AI Ultra gives broader access to Veo 3.1. For social ad creation and visual content this is a serious asset that was previously only available via external video tooling.

Deep Search in AI Mode also stands out: according to Google, it issues hundreds of searches, reasons across the information found and compiles a fully cited report in minutes; in the Gemini app its counterpart is called Deep Research. Google Antigravity, confirmed via Google’s subscription page, is an agentic development platform on which AI agents independently plan and execute complex coding tasks.

The power of Gems, Google’s version of custom AI assistants, lies in building personalised AI roles for recurring tasks. You create a Gem for email processing, one for content briefings and one for customer research, each with their own instructions and context. Combined with Gemini’s integration in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, that makes Gemini the most integrated choice for those who spend the majority of their working day in Google Workspace.

Gemini is the best choice if:

  • You use Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar daily and want AI built directly into those tools
  • You analyse or summarise large documents via Gemini Notebook
  • You want visual content, video and text in one subscription via Gemini Omni and Nano Banana
  • You are a developer and want to explore agentic coding via Jules or Antigravity

“Our first party models, like Gemini, now process over 10 billion tokens per minute via direct API use by our customers, and the Gemini App has grown to over 750 million monthly active users.”

— Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, February 2026

In July 2026 Pichai reported 950 million monthly active users for the Gemini app, and on 11 August he announced the 1 billion mark.

ChatGPT: the strongest tool for autonomous task execution and agentic workflows

ChatGPT is in 2026 the strongest tool for those who want to hand off longer tasks and build a shared knowledge base for a team.

In 2026 ChatGPT has grown into a platform for autonomous task execution. With ChatGPT Work, which replaces the former agent mode, you hand off longer tasks with multiple steps: according to OpenAI, “an agent designed for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables”. You describe the desired result, the agent completes it.

What makes ChatGPT strong in 2026

Projects have grown into a fully living knowledge base. You connect Slack channels or Google Drive folders directly as sources, paste notes and briefings, and ChatGPT uses that context in every conversation within the project. That is a fundamental shift compared to the classic chat interface where you had to provide context every time. Shared Projects let multiple people work in the same workspace with shared instructions and sources.

ChatGPT Work takes over what agent mode used to do: retrieving data from multiple websites, finishing documents and presentations, updating spreadsheets. It works while you do something else. Connections to other services have run through ChatGPT’s Plugin directory since 9 July 2026; full MCP connections are only available on Business and Enterprise.

Custom GPTs let you build your own AI assistants with specific instructions, their own knowledge base and their own tone. Useful for recurring scenarios where you do not want to brief again each time, or when you want to roll out a standardised tool for a team.

Since 3 September 2026 the flagship model is GPT-6 Astra, in the chat of Pro, Business and Enterprise. In the regular chat, Plus uses GPT-5.6 Sol, which succeeded GPT-5.5 on 9 July 2026, and for now only gets Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

For e-commerce the impact of agents like ChatGPT Work is particularly significant. AI agents can browse, compare and make purchases on behalf of buyers without directly visiting a webshop. How your webshop becomes findable for AI agents has thereby become its own discipline, directly connected to performance marketing and the way you position your products and services online.

ChatGPT is the best choice if:

  • You want to hand off longer, multi-step tasks via ChatGPT Work
  • You want to build a shared workspace for a team
  • You want to build your own AI assistants for specific scenarios
  • You want in-depth research where the AI combines sources itself

“2025 has seen the arrival of agents that can do real cognitive work; writing computer code will never be the same. 2026 will likely see the arrival of systems that can figure out novel insights.”

— Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in “The Gentle Singularity” (June 2025)

Claude: the strongest tool for writing, coding and document analysis

Claude is in 2026 the strongest tool for writing, coding and document analysis. For knowledge-intensive work where the quality of the output matters, Claude is the most consistently reliable choice of the four.

“In 2025 Claude transformed how developers work, and in 2026 it will do the same for knowledge work”

— Kate Jensen, Head of Americas at Anthropic

What sets Claude apart in 2026

Cowork is Claude’s most impactful launch this year. It is a work mode in the Claude apps: on the desktop with access to your local files and folders, and since 7 July 2026 also in beta on claude.ai and in the mobile apps, first for Max subscribers. Since 26 August 2026 Cowork opens its own built-in browser for web tasks in the desktop app. You describe a task, Claude makes a plan, executes it step by step and delivers a finished result. No terminal, no code needed. Claude can sort and rename files, write reports from loose notes, create spreadsheets with working formulas, and automatically plan recurring tasks on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Connectors connect Cowork to Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft 365 and more. In our guide Claude Cowork explained you can read what it costs and how it differs from Claude Desktop.

Claude Code is now one of the most widely used coding tools on the market for developers. At Spotify engineers can start large-scale codebase migrations simply by describing in plain language what needs to change.

“Cowork brings that same power to knowledge workers.”

— Kate Jensen, Head of Americas at Anthropic

Claude in Excel and PowerPoint also stands out in 2026. Anthropic has integrated Claude directly into Excel and PowerPoint as full add-ins. Claude reads the complete context of your spreadsheet or presentation, and works inside it, without you needing to switch applications. Cowork and the Office add-ins also exchange context with each other: what Claude has done in an Excel file is available in the next PowerPoint session. For those who work with Microsoft Office daily, this is a concrete time saving. Microsoft 365 Copilot has also offered Claude Opus 5 in Word, Excel and PowerPoint since late July 2026.

For content production, copywriting, blog articles, analyses and email flows, Claude is our strongest choice of the four. In our daily work, the nuance in language, the logical structure and the reliability of the output are noticeably higher than with the other three on complex writing tasks. The same applies to CRO analyses: Claude processes complete funnels, heatmap reports and user data in one session and delivers concrete improvement points without needing to split up information.

Claude is the best choice if:

  • You write: blog articles, ads, pitches, reports, email flows
  • You code: Claude Code is one of the most widely used tools for development
  • You want files and folders managed via the desktop app (Cowork)
  • You need in-depth reasoning for strategic analyses and CRO

Perplexity: the strongest tool for real-time research with cited sources

Perplexity is in 2026 the strongest tool for real-time research with cited sources. For market research, fact-checking and competitive analysis it is our first choice.

Perplexity’s core features in 2026

Model Council, launched on 5 February 2026, puts the answers of three top models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google side by side for the same question, after which a separate model summarises where they agree and where they differ. On the web it is for Max subscribers. Automatically routing tasks to the best-suited model is the job of Perplexity Computer, for example images to a Gemini model and coding to a Claude model.

“Multi-model is the future”

— Perplexity, at the launch of Computer (February 2026)

Pro Search conducts multi-layered research by splitting a question into sub-questions, searching dozens of sources per component and synthesising everything into a structured report with clickable citations.

Comet, Perplexity’s own browser, has been free since 2 October 2025 for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android and integrates the search engine on every tab. How Comet compares to Claude in Chrome, Anthropic’s browser extension, is covered in a separate explainer. Perplexity Computer, launched on 25 February 2026 and discussed by TechCrunch, is an agentic system that executes complex workflows and orchestrated 19 AI models at launch. It was first only available on Max ($200 per month), and since March 2026 also on Pro.

In February 2026, Perplexity phased out the ads it had been testing since 2024 and now relies fully on subscriptions, the Financial Times reported. The search results therefore show no ads, although the company has not ruled out a return.

Perplexity is the best choice if:

  • You need quick, reliable research with verifiable sources
  • You want to compare multiple AI models for the same question
  • You conduct market analyses, competitive research or content research
  • You fact-check before publishing something or making decisions

Our guide on writing better prompts helps you get more out of every tool, including Perplexity Pro Search.

How to combine the four tools in one workflow

A smart marketer or entrepreneur uses all four tools, each at the right moment in the workflow. Below is a practical example for content marketing, but the logic is applicable to any discipline, from lead generation to performance marketing campaigns.

Step 1: Research via Perplexity. Search for market trends, competitive positions and relevant figures. Every claim is linked to a clickable source you can verify before using it.

Step 2: Strategy and planning in ChatGPT. Open a Project, load the Perplexity research as a source, add your briefing and let ChatGPT develop a content calendar or campaign strategy. The context is retained for every subsequent conversation.

Step 3: Writing and creating in Claude. Provide the strategy as context and let Claude write the actual texts. Blog articles, ads, email sequences, pitches. This is where the quality gain is greatest. Always use the three-element structure in your prompts: give Claude context about your situation, define which role it should take on and be concrete about the desired format and tone.

Step 4: Execute and automate via Gemini or Cowork. Use Gemini in Gmail and Docs for execution in Google Workspace, or use Cowork in Claude to manage files, compile reports or automatically plan recurring tasks.

“Cowork makes it possible for Claude to deliver polished, near final work.”

— Scott White, head of product for Claude Enterprise at Anthropic

Which subscription do you need?

All four platforms offer free versions. For most users that is sufficient to get started. Upgrade to paid when you work with AI for multiple hours daily and run into rate limits, or when you want access to the latest models and agentic features.

The four basic subscriptions are close to each other in price. In the US, ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro each cost $20 per month (Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro $17 with annual billing). In Belgium you pay €23 for ChatGPT Plus, €18 for Claude Pro (excluding VAT, €15 with annual billing) and €21.99 for Google AI Pro; Perplexity only shows dollars. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 per month in the US and is currently the strongest bundle value of the four. For that amount you get Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8 Flash, Gemini Notebook, video with Gemini Omni, images with Nano Banana, Antigravity for agentic development and 5 TB cloud storage (increased from 2 to 5 TB in April 2026 at no extra cost). Few platforms deliver this much for the same price. For context: Google AI Pro is part of Google One, which crossed 150 million paying subscribers in May 2025 after 50% growth in 15 months. Those figures cover Google One as a whole and mainly show the scale at which Google is rolling out this bundle.

  • Starter package (around $20/month): Google AI Pro only. For those who already work in Gmail, Drive and Docs, this is the most logical first step. You immediately have access to text, image, video, research and Workspace integration in one subscription.
  • Strong package (around $40/month): Google AI Pro + Claude Pro. Gemini for ecosystem and multimedia, Claude for writing, coding and in-depth analysis. Use Perplexity free for basic research.
  • Professional package (around $60/month): Google AI Pro + Claude Pro + Perplexity Pro. Full coverage for intensive daily use. The combination of Gemini’s integration, Claude’s writing quality and Perplexity’s research makes this the most complete setup for marketers and entrepreneurs.
  • Maximum package (expect several hundred dollars per month): Google AI Pro + ChatGPT Pro ($100 or $200 per month; since 10 September 2026 the $200 plan is temporarily closed to new subscribers) + Claude Max (from $100 per month) + Perplexity Max ($200 per month). For agencies or teams that intensively use all four platforms. Google AI Ultra (from $99.99 per month, or $199.99 for 20x the limits of AI Pro) replaces AI Pro here for those who need more Veo 3.1 and the highest Antigravity limits.

ROI calculation: if AI saves you two hours per week at your hourly rate, the starter package pays for itself within one week.

Which tool is the right starting point for you?

If you are starting with AI or want to upgrade from one tool to a multi-tool workflow, choose your starting point based on your primary work type.

Do you primarily work in Google Workspace? Start with Gemini AI Pro. For $19.99 per month (€21.99 in Belgium) you get the broadest ecosystem of the four and the integration feels immediately usable.

Do you have a team and want to collaborate in a structured way around AI? ChatGPT Plus or Business gives you the strongest project workspaces and team functions.

Do you write a lot, analyse documents or work on code? Claude Pro or Max is the most reliable choice for knowledge-intensive work.

Do you do a lot of research, fact-checking or competitive analysis? Then Perplexity Pro is the logical choice. The cited sources are the core; if you also want Model Council on the web, you need Max.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

ChatGPT is in 2026 the strongest tool for autonomous task execution: ChatGPT Work completes longer, multi-step tasks through to a finished result. Claude is in 2026 the strongest tool for writing, coding and document analysis. Claude Cowork adds tasks in your files, scheduled tasks and its own browser. For longer tasks with a finished result choose ChatGPT Work or Claude Cowork; for quality text production and coding choose Claude.

That depends on your ecosystem. Google AI Pro ($19.99 per month, €21.99 in Belgium) bundles Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8 Flash, Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM), video with Gemini Omni, Nano Banana, Antigravity and 5 TB storage. If you already work in Gmail, Drive and Docs, the value for money is particularly strong. ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month, €23 in Belgium) is better for those who want to hand off longer tasks via ChatGPT Work and need strong team projects. Both are a good investment in their domain.

Perplexity is in 2026 the strongest tool for real-time research with cited sources. Where ChatGPT and Claude excel at generating and reasoning, Perplexity is strong at finding and verifying. Model Council also lets you compare the output of three top models side by side for the same question. For market research, competitive analysis and fact-checking, Perplexity is our first choice.

Claude Cowork is a work mode in the Claude apps that gives Claude access to your files and folders. You describe a task and Claude executes it independently: sorting files, writing reports, creating spreadsheets, or automatically planning recurring tasks. Cowork is included in all paid Claude plans; since 7 July 2026 it also works in beta on claude.ai and in the mobile apps (first for Max subscribers), and since 26 August 2026 it has its own built-in browser in the desktop app. Interesting for anyone who repeatedly processes files, compiles documents or wants to automate routine tasks without coding.

Claude is in 2026 the strongest choice for ad copy, email copywriting and content production. In our experience, the language mastery, structural logic and consistency in tone are noticeably higher than with the other three tools on complex writing tasks. ChatGPT with a well-configured Project is a good second option if you work in a team environment where multiple people need the same context.

Yes, but the approach differs per objective. For classic SEO, Claude (for content) and Perplexity (for keyword research and competitive analysis) are the strongest tools. For GEO, meaning being findable in AI search environments like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, it is important that your content is clearly structured, offers citable answers and is semantically well written. More info via clickforest.com/en/online-marketing/geo.

For Shopify e-commerce it depends on the task. Perplexity is strong for market research and competitive analysis. Claude is the best choice for product descriptions, email flows and content creation. ChatGPT Work can retrieve data and complete tasks across multiple platforms. Also note agentic commerce: AI agents are increasingly shopping on behalf of consumers without directly visiting a webshop.

Not necessarily. A practical approach: choose one paid subscription based on your primary work type and use the free versions of the other tools for supplementary tasks. Perplexity free is already strong for basic research. Claude free gives access to basic capabilities. Gemini free works in Gmail. Only if you intensively need advanced functions like Cowork, ChatGPT Work or Model Council is a paid subscription worthwhile.
