Claude Cowork explained: what it is, what it costs and how it relates to Claude Desktop

Since early 2026 there has been a new way to work with Claude, and the search numbers for the name shoot up every month. Claude Cowork is the mode in which you do not ask Claude a question but give it a task: it works across your files, calendar, mail and connected tools until the job is done. In this article I explain what Claude Cowork exactly is, how it differs from Claude Desktop and regular chat, what it costs, and what to watch out for before you let it loose on your business files. Everything below has been checked against the state of July 2026, with source and date attached, because this product literally changes by the month.

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is the work mode of Claude in which you describe a task and Claude completes it independently across your files, calendar, email and connected tools. Anthropic itself, July 2026: “and it works across your files, calendar, email, messaging app, the web, and the other tools you connect until the job is done”. Not a separate app, but a mode within the existing Claude apps.

Cowork appeared on 12 January 2026 as a research preview for Max subscribers in the Claude Desktop app on macOS, and grew into a full product in half a year. Technically it is the agent approach of Claude Code, but for knowledge work beyond programming: according to the official help center you describe a desired outcome, step away and come back to finished work. What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Desktop?

Claude Desktop is Claude’s computer app; Cowork is a work mode you choose within it, next to regular chat. Since 7 July 2026 Cowork is also in beta on claude.ai and in the mobile apps, so the equation “Cowork = desktop” no longer holds. The real distinction is not the device but the way of working: chat answers, Cowork finishes tasks.

The kinship with Claude Code is not marketing talk but architecture. Independent AI researcher Simon Willison, creator of Datasette, put it sharply on launch day:

“As far as I can tell Claude Cowork is regular Claude Code wrapped in a less intimidating default interface and with a filesystem sandbox configured for you without you needing to know what a ‘filesystem sandbox’ is.”

Willison called it “a really smart product” in the same analysis, because the value of Claude Code finally becomes available to a non-technical audience (simonwillison.net, January 2026). What can Claude Cowork do in practice?

Cowork works with folders and files (Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, images, CSV and more), executes tasks end-to-end, splits big projects into subtasks that run in parallel, runs scheduled tasks unattended and shows every step it takes. It is extensible with plugins, skills, connectors and sub-agents (product page, July 2026).

Who uses that in practice? Anthropic analysed 1.2 million anonymised Cowork sessions from more than 600,000 organisations over the last two weeks of May 2026, and itself reports that over 90% of usage is not software development. The biggest categories according to the figures TechCrunch published: business processes and operations (33.4%), content creation and copywriting (16.4%) and only then software development (8.7%). Important label: this is Anthropic’s own analysis, not independent research, and it says what users do with it, not how well it does those tasks.

Since 30 January 2026 there are also eleven open-source plugins that specialise Cowork per role, among others for sales, marketing, legal and customer support. Matt Piccolella of the Anthropic product team explained why in TechCrunch:

“Really, what we’re doing with this launch is just bringing them to Cowork and giving them that kind of user-friendly, UI-centric flavor that will allow the maximum number of people to use them.”

Many of those connections run via connectors based on MCP, the protocol that lets AI read and operate your business systems.

Where can you use Claude Cowork: desktop, web or mobile?

State of play July 2026: Cowork is generally available in the Claude Desktop app on macOS and Windows (since 9 April 2026), and since 7 July 2026 it has been rolling out in beta to claude.ai and the mobile apps for iOS and Android, starting with Max subscribers. Anthropic literally says the beta “is rolling out over the next several weeks starting with Max users, with more plans to follow” (Anthropic, July 2026).

The web and mobile version runs on “remote sessions”: the task runs in the cloud, not on your own machine. You start something on your laptop, follow it on your phone, and scheduled tasks keep running without any of your devices being online. Chat and Cowork have since also shared one home tab with one sidebar and search (help center, July 2026). The full rollout timeline so far: research preview for Max on macOS (12 January), Pro added (16 January), scheduled tasks (25 February), computer use as preview (23 March), general availability on macOS and Windows (9 April), web and mobile in beta (7 July), each according to the official release notes.

How much does Claude Cowork cost?

Claude Cowork is not a separate product: it is included in all paid Claude plans and not in the free plan. The cheapest entry point is Pro: $17 per month with annual billing or $20 monthly, in US dollars, as checked on the official pricing page on 17 July 2026.

Above that it gets more nuanced: Max starts from $100 per month with a 5x or 20x usage level compared to Pro; Team charges $20 to $25 per standard seat and $100 to $125 per premium seat; Enterprise is custom. Anthropic publishes no official euro prices, so do not convert anything yourself as if it were the EU price.

One thing to know before you start: Cowork consumes your usage limits faster than regular chat, Anthropic itself says in the help center. An agent that works independently for an hour simply consumes more than a short chat session. For an SME that means: start on Pro, and only scale up to Max or Team when your limits really pinch.

Is Claude Cowork safe for your files and data?

The permission model is strict: you decide which folders and tools Claude can access, and far-reaching actions require your approval. Every session runs isolated: locally in a virtual machine, on web and mobile in a temporary sandbox on Anthropic servers that is destroyed afterwards (architecture documentation, July 2026).

Concretely, local sessions use Apple Virtualization on macOS and Hyper-V on Windows; remote sessions have no access to your network by default and restrict outgoing traffic to allow-listed destinations.

Still, safety is no footnote here. Anthropic itself warns about prompt injection and about accidentally deleting or overwriting files, and recommends clear, unambiguous instructions (TechCrunch, January 2026). Willison added a critical note that every non-technical user should hear:

The practical translation for an SME: give Cowork a separate working folder instead of your entire document drive, make sure your backups are in order before you start, and let it run on harmless work for a week before you put it on client data. What are the limitations of Claude Cowork?

Honest overview, state of July 2026, straight from Anthropic’s own documentation: memory from your regular chats does not carry over to Cowork sessions (except within the same project), sessions cannot be shared with colleagues, and some features are desktop-only, including live artifacts and plugins with local MCP servers. Web and mobile are also still beta and rolling out in phases.

Two things you deliberately do not know today from official sources, and an honest article should say so: Anthropic publishes no language list for Cowork (Claude is multilingual, but an official Dutch promise specifically for Cowork does not exist), and the company currently does not communicate which Claude model powers Cowork. Independent adoption figures, such as user numbers, do not exist either; the session analysis above is the only published usage data point.

What does Claude Cowork mean for Belgian SMEs?

The biggest shift for an SME is that AI work no longer stops when you close your laptop. Recurring work such as weekly reports from Excel files, cleaning up folders, or a first version of quotes and content based on your own documents: that is exactly the profile of the biggest usage category from Anthropic’s session analysis, business processes and operations.

The pitfall is the same as with every AI tool: starting without boundaries. Start with one task you now do manually every week, give Cowork only the folder it needs, and judge the result the way you would judge the work of a new employee. Conclusion: from assistant to colleague

Claude Cowork is the clearest step so far from AI as an answering machine to AI as a colleague that finishes work. The figures and the rollout of the past half year show this is no side project: from research preview in January to general availability in April and web plus mobile in July 2026, with over 90% of usage outside software development.

My advice: try it small, with a bounded task and a separate folder, and measure whether it really saves you time. And compare deliberately: for one task regular chat or another AI tool remains the better choice, for recurring file work the agent mode is a category of its own.
